Manufacturing Engineering Internship - Summer 2025

Role Overview

Are you a self-motivated student who loves tackling challenging projects? Are you looking for an opportunity to gain practical engineering experience and work on cutting edge technology? If so, Physik Instrumente could be the place for you! As an intern at PI, you would partner with our manufacturing engineers and gain insight into the processes and systems used to deliver our innovative instruments and technology to our customers. Students who enjoy building mechanical things and are curious about a mechanical engineering career in a manufacturing environment are highly encouraged to apply.

The 2025 Summer Internship program will run from May - August 2025.

Our products include air bearings and air bearing stages, hexapod positioning and alignment systems, precision actuators, piezo drivers and much more! What You Will Do: 

  • Design fixtures for use in assembly, metrology, and manufacturing to support new and existing products.
  • Model and create engineering drawings in SolidWorks.
  • Machine new fixtures and modify existing fixtures using manual equipment including, but not limited to milling machines, lathes, saws, and 3-D printers.
  • Machine, modify, and 3-D print existing parts for use in production. 
  • Troubleshoot and provide general support/analysis for assembly, metrology, R&D, and manufacturing issues. Includes ECR/ECO and Defects/Quality issues.
  • Optimize and improve processes for manufacturing/assembly.
  • Create documentation such as assembly build procedures and in-process inspection.
  • Upload documents to the company Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Order and organize tooling, material, and other supplies for shop use.

 

Requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in a full-time academic program from an accredited college or university, majoring in mechanical engineering or another related field.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without needing sponsorship.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as milling, turning, and surface grinding.
  • Machine tool experience — CNC or manual machining.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical systems.
  • Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks.
  • Curiosity, creativity, problem solving skills — this is an opportunity to be learning new things every day.

 

Shift Schedule:  

  • Monday-Friday, in office.
  • Students typically work 40 hours a week, but hours can be flexible. All work needs to be conducted during our core business hours; the exact hours can be discussed with your manager.
