Role Overview
PI (Physik Instrumente) LP has an immediate opening for an experienced Mechanical Engineer in Product Development for nano-positioning and micro-positioning products including motorized and direct drive linear stages, air bearing stages and piezo electric actuators. This is full time position, Monday through Friday.
Our ideal candidate is a mechanical engineer with 5+ years of experience designing in CAD/SolidWorks for opto-mechanical instruments and mechatronics with demonstrated experience with high precision applications.
Experience with the following highly desirable:
- Design of: High precision mechanisms & motion control systems, optical mounts using kinematic principles, flexure mechanisms, thermally insensitive and thermally compensated mechanisms
- Designing for low particle environments/cleanrooms
- Using FEA for modal analysis and thermal growth analysis
- Optical system integration, alignment and stability testing
- Robotics, automation and wafer/DUT handling systems
- New product development and introduction
Requirements
- BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience designing and building mechatronic systems. Additional related experience will strengthen your application.
- Ability to develop prototype models into manufacturing ready products.
- Experience with 3D modeling software and design, preferably SolidWorks.
- Comfortable working with FEA for assessing strength, fatigue, thermal, and frequency response of structures.
- Disciplined in drafting GD&T practices.
- Experience with analysis: FEA, Tolerance Stack-up, Error budget, RCA.
- Knowledge of manufacturing methods (precision machining, heat treatments etc.).
- Integration with electrical system components including circuit boards and cable harnesses.
- Experience creating production model design documentation, specifications, and product catalogs.
- Proficiency with design control, Product Data Management (PDM), and Enterprise Resource Management (ERP).
- Experience working with multidisciplinary groups driving schedule and tasks.
- Passion for learning, iterating, and first principles.
- Confidence and experience to move quickly and make informed decisions.
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills.
- Follow 5S and lean manufacturing principles and practices in an ISO 9001 manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ yrs. experience in product development ideally in production environments.
- Previous experience with motion stages and systems.
- Prior experience with stabilized gimbal systems, motion control, and robotics.
- Building qualified hardware for aerospace, military, or automotive applications (DO-160, MIL-STD, SAE, etc.).
- Structural analysis using ANSYS.
- Control system design, simulation, and development.
- Kinematic and dynamic analysis.
- Experience with data acquisition, modal measurements, and LabView.
- Candidates must be able to produce evidence of the permanent ability to live and work in the US as an employment contingency.
